Privacy Policy

Overview

Scanji ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Scanji app, how we use it, and the choices you have.

By using Scanji, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please stop using the app.

Scanji is fully offline

Scanji works entirely on your device. It does not connect to the internet, send data to external servers, or communicate with any third-party service during normal use. Everything - photo scanning, word detection, dictionary lookups and searches, your study library, and your review history - stays on your phone.

The only network activity associated with Scanji is handled directly by the app store you downloaded it from - the Apple App Store or Google Play - for downloading the app and processing any in-app purchase or subscription. We have no involvement in or visibility into those transactions beyond receiving a confirmation that a purchase was completed.

Information the app handles

Because the app is offline, we collect nothing. For completeness, here is everything Scanji touches and where it goes:

  • Photos you scan - processed entirely on-device using on-device OCR. Images are never uploaded anywhere.
  • Camera and photo access - Scanji asks for the camera so you can photograph text, and for your photos only if you choose to scan a picture you already have. Both permissions are requested by your device's operating system (iOS or Android), you can refuse or revoke either at any time in your device settings, and neither gives us any access - the images are read on your device and stay there.
  • Study data - words you save, review history, and quiz results are stored locally on your device only.
  • Reminders - if you turn on streak reminders, the notification is scheduled locally by your device's operating system (iOS or Android) on your own device. There is no push server, so nothing about your study habits or your schedule is sent anywhere.
  • Exports - when you export your words as a spreadsheet or an Anki file, the file is created on your device and handed to whatever you choose to share it with. Once you send it somewhere, it is covered by that destination's privacy practices rather than ours.
  • Purchase information - handled entirely by the app store you purchased through (the Apple App Store or Google Play). We receive only a confirmation that a purchase or subscription is active, so the app knows to unlock Pro; we never see your payment details. Subscriptions are managed and cancelled through your app store account, not through us.

We do not collect your name, email address, location, or any account credentials. No account is required to use Scanji.

How we use your information

The only information that reaches us is an anonymous purchase confirmation from the app store (Apple App Store or Google Play), used solely to validate your access to paid features. We do not use any data to serve ads, build profiles, or sell information to third parties.

Third-party services

Scanji does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and it does not access or transmit your device's advertising identifier (Android's Advertising ID or Apple's IDFA). The only external party involved is the app store you downloaded Scanji from:

  • Apple App Store - for distribution, in-app purchases, and subscriptions on iOS. Subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
  • Google Play - for distribution, in-app purchases, and subscriptions on Android. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

The dictionary data bundled in the app comes from the open JMdictandKANJIDIC2 projects and ships inside the download. Using it involves no request to those projects and no connection of any kind.

Data retention

Your study data lives on your device and only your device. If you delete the app, that data is removed. There is nothing on our end to delete because nothing was ever sent to us.

Children's privacy

Scanji is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete data we hold about you. Because we store very little data, most requests can be fulfilled simply by deleting the app. For anything else, contact us below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the revised policy.
